Step Back in Time: A Charming Stay at San Diego's Historic Ramada St. James

RAMADA ST. JAMES 830 6th Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101 US

Nestled in the heart of San Diego's vibrant Gaslamp Quarter, the Ramada St. James is a charming, historic gem that offers much more than meets the eye. Built in 1913 as the city's first high-rise luxury hotel, this architectural beauty holds decades of stories within its walls. A true hidden treasure, the hotel once boasted one of the fastest elevators of its time, a relic you can still experience today. Step inside, and you'll be greeted by an ornate wrought iron elevator door—a vintage touch that transports you back to the early 20th century. The original elevator still operates, giving you a nostalgic ride up the ten-story building, where you can watch each floor pass by through an open frame.

With 99 guest rooms and suites, the Ramada St. James offers something for everyone. If panoramic city and bay views are on your wish list, the Harborview Rooftop Terrace should be your first stop. Up there, you'll find cozy tables and benches, perfect for enjoying a glass of wine as you take in the breathtaking skyline, especially as the city lights up under the moon. During my visit, I sat there, savoring the view, glass in hand, despite my team’s loss to the Chargers. It was still a peaceful, romantic escape—just what anyone could use after a tough game.

When it comes to value, Ramada St. James doesn’t disappoint. For just $99, I booked a room with two double beds, but to my surprise, I got much more than expected. The "double beds" actually turned out to be two separate bedrooms, each with its own private door, key, and sink area. Between the rooms was an adjoining door that could be locked for extra privacy. Each room was equipped with all the essentials: a flat-screen TV, coffee maker, closet, A/C and heating unit, ceiling fan, and—of course—free Wi-Fi. The master room boasted a full bathroom, making it a perfect setup for friends who want to share a space but still have their own personal haven. And if you're looking to indulge, the hotel also offers a luxurious 1,300-square-foot Presidential Suite, sure to impress.

Beyond the rooms, the hotel’s amenities make your stay even sweeter. Late riser? No problem. Check-out isn’t until noon, which is a godsend after a night out in the lively Gaslamp Quarter, where you’ll find endless bars, clubs, restaurants, and boutique shops just steps from the hotel’s front door. Whether you're in town for a convention—San Diego's Convention Center is only a few blocks away—or just to enjoy the nightlife, the hotel's central location is unbeatable.

Tucked within the hotel is the elegant French Kitchen. Stepping inside feels like you've been transported straight to a charming café in France. The menu is a food lover’s dream, offering a selection of freshly prepared dishes that blend traditional French flavors with a modern twist. From buttery croissants and rich pastries to savory quiches and perfectly cooked entrees, every bite will make you feel like you're dining along the Seine. It’s a perfect spot for a romantic meal or simply indulging in gourmet food right at the heart of San Diego.

For those looking to stay productive, there’s a business center and free access to a nearby gym. The hotel also offers valet parking for $20 per night, allowing you to come and go as you please. If valet isn't your style, there's metered street parking or a parking lot next door. Hungry? Brian’s 24, attached to the hotel, serves up a massive menu around the clock, offering everything from breakfast to dinner, and yes, they also deliver room service 24/7. A night owl’s dream!

The Harborview Rooftop Terrace at Ramada St. James is an absolute must-visit, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the San Diego skyline and bay. Whether you're enjoying a peaceful morning coffee or sipping wine under the stars, this rooftop oasis provides the perfect backdrop for relaxation, with cozy seating and a serene ambiance that will make you feel on top of the world.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Ramada St. James is its rich history. During WWII, the hotel served as an R&R resort for military personnel, adding to its storied past. And if you’re curious about the supernatural, ask the friendly staff about the ghostly activity on the 9th floor. Known for its hauntings, the hotel has become somewhat of a hotspot for paranormal enthusiasts. Guests have reported flickering lights, unexplained door movements, and an eerie energy—nothing terrifying, but enough to add a little thrill to your stay. I personally felt an odd presence in my room, but rather than feeling scared, I was fascinated. It’s all part of the charm at this historic landmark.

The young, friendly staff is knowledgeable about the hotel’s history and happy to share their experiences. This boutique hotel offers a unique blend of historic elegance, modern convenience, and a touch of the paranormal, making it an unforgettable place to stay.
